Bearing a child for nine months can be so overwhelming, still, no matter how much preparation a mother makes, when the baby finally enters this world, it may take her off-guard. Think that the hardship is over after finally bringing out the bundle of joy? Think again.
While some parents go on to deal with lack of sleep because of continuous feedings or tiredness because of constant changing of diapers, there are those who are slapped with post-partum depression, a mood disorder that encapsulates a lot of things.
Post-Partum Depression
Don’t get us wrong – pregnancy is such a miraculous blessing and the same can be said of the baby.
However, it can take a toll on a woman’s mind and body, which only explains that there are more things beyond the adorable baby and picture-perfect complete family.
Post-partum depression is very common and is nowhere near a taboo: a lot of people experience it even after giving birth to such a wonderful creature.
There’s no need to invalidate a mother’s feelings because as mentioned, pregnancy is both a rigorous and memorable moment.
In this age of social media where we just see the “beautiful” side of people, it is best that we keep in mind that we have our own battles to face.
While for some people it just takes a short period of time before they go back to the way they were, there are those whose post-partum depression lingers.
Moms from different walks of life can experience this, needless to say, even celebrities aren’t immune from it.
Cardi B’s Challenge
Superstar Cardi B was the latest to admit that she, too, experienced postpartum depression after giving birth to her daughter Kulture Kiari with husband rapper Offset six months ago.
The “Bodak Yellow” hitmaker revealed that she initially thought she wasn’t going to develop such feelings even after her doctor early on warned her of the possibility after she delivered.
As much as she tried “avoiding” it, she was caught off-guard as she felt things that she didn’t actually expect.
Cardi B dropped out of the tour she was supposed to go with Bruno Mars after giving birth to Kulture.
The 26-year-old at the time thought six weeks of rest would be enough to recover before she goes back to hustle again, but she thought wrong.
She said that she wasn’t physically and mentally prepared to return to the scene after her pregnancy and even revealed that she wasn’t ready to leave the side of her little angel.
The “I Like It” singer also noted the major physical changes that happened after the pregnancy, saying that she still has the baby weight. Cardi B explained that she still doesn’t have the energy she used to have before her pregnancy, which was quite odd for her.
Other Celebs Who Spoke Out about Post-Partum Depression
Meanwhile, Cardi B isn’t alone in opening up about her battle with post-partum depression. There are a handful of celebrities who aren’t afraid to talk about it in the open, which just normalized one of the most common challenges a mother faces once she has given birth.
Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen, who is quite an open book, shared that she suffered from post-partum depression after giving birth to her and husband John Legend’s first daughter, Luna, in 2016.
In an Instagram post, she uploaded a short clip of her stomach while she’s in a bikini – however, although she was OK with sharing the photos, the “Lip Sync Battle” host admitted that she still feels insecure from time to time because everyone on the ‘gram seems to rock hot bods.
“Iron Man” actress and Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow, meanwhile, developed post-partum depression after the birth of her second child, Moses, in 2006.
She explained that she wasn’t connecting with people at all and that she felt like a zombie – which is a far cry from what she experienced when she delivered her first child, Apple.
This is why she thought that that meant that she’s an awful mom. She got through it with exercise and therapy.
Singer Adele is also one who had the same problem after her pregnancy with his son Angelo.
She was hesitant to talk to other people about the symptoms she experienced but when she finally opened up to a friend and learned that her friend was undergoing the same path, she started feeling better.
