Being the Queen of the United Kingdom and fifteen other Commonwealth realms, the monarch stays at different places during different times of the year (what can we say; with great power come better-living options. *wink).
Before the passing of her husband, Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh), the Queen used to stay at Buckingham Palace, which boasts around 775 rooms. For a short span during the pandemic, she lived at Windsor Castle, which she usually visits at weekends or Easter holidays. With over 1,000 rooms, the property has enough space for housing any number of guests and family members you could possibly think of! Till date, it’s one of the world’s largest castles.
During summers, the Queen prefers spending time at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, which sits over 50,000 acres of land and has over 150 buildings. She likes to start the Royal Week by staying in the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and later move to the Balmoral Castle. When Christmas is around the corner, the Queen and other royal family members shift to the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. And finally, whenever she visits New Ireland, she makes it a point to spend some days at Hillsborough Castle (now that’s the true meaning of royalty, eh?).
Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla
Prince Charles defines the saying like mother, like son. Since his 2005 wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles, he’s been living at Clarence House in London, but he also owns the Highgrove House in Gloucestershire. The Duke of Wales spends most of his holidays at the Balmoral Castle, where he has a 53,000 acre cottage named Birkhall. He’s also the proud owner of a country home in Llwynywermod and Tamarisk House in the Isles of Scilly.
Prince William and Duchess Kate
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who tied the knot in 2011 and have three children, have been residing in Kensington Palace Apartment 1A for a long time. According to reports, their four-story apartment has 20 rooms. The couple also has a ten-bedroom country home named Anmer Hall on Sandringham Estate which they were given by the Queen as a wedding present.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
After getting engaged in 2017, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry put up at the Nottingham Cottage in Kensington Palace until the arrival of their first child, Archie Mountbatten. After this, they moved to the Frogmore Cottage and stayed there until early 2020. Not much later, they bought a $14.7 million estate in Montecito, California, and moved to the US.
