Ladies and gentlemen, it’s the time to rejoice – Marvel Studios is back in business!
After an almost two-year-long hiatus, Marvel Studios is back with a new film. On April 3, 2021, the production company released the third trailer of Black Widow, and to everyone’s surprise, within 24 hours, it scored 70 million views!
Usually, the more trailers of a movie are released, the lesser views they get. But in MCU’s (Marvel Cinematic Universe) case, the scenario is quite the opposite. Reports have revealed that the third trailer gathered a whopping 1.3 million more views in the first 24 hours than the second trailer released in March 2020. It even surpassed the trailers of Marvel Disney Plus series WandaVision and Loki, which had received 53 million and 36 million views, respectively.
The overwhelming response from fans shows how eagerly they’ve been waiting for a Marvel movie since the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Initially, Black Widow was supposed to hit theaters on May 1, 2020, but due to the pandemic the movie was postponed to November 6, 2020, then further to May 7, 2021, and then finally to July 9, 2021. But as they say, all’s well that ends well. So after numerous setbacks, it’s finally releasing in both theaters and Disney+ (with an added Premier Access price).
A peek inside Black Widow’s trailer
Set after the 2016 movie Captain America: Civil War, Black Widow shows Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) facing her past to secure her future. In the trailer, Romanoff returns to her former Soviet Bloc to solve some “unfinished business” and meet her estranged spy family. The trailer hints at some activities from Romanoff’s past life which prompt her to become an Avenger. It also shows actors like Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour as Romanoff’s family members.
How does it fit in the MCU storyline?
Romanoff first came to light through Iron Man 2 when she disguised as Tony Stark’s secretary despite being S.H.I.E.L.D.’s undercover spy. At that time, nobody knew where she came from or how she joined the S.H.I.E.L.D. Five years later, in Avengers: Age of Ultron, flashbacks from Romanoff’s past life showed her rigorous training in martial arts and marksmanship at the infamous Red Room Academy.
It also pictured Romanoff killing an innocent man for completing her training. Plus, when the Avengers team took shelter at Clint Barton’s home, Romanoff told Bruce Banner that sterilization was a prime part of her Red Room graduation ceremony. Moreover, the flashback also showed glimpses of her sterilization process.
